This story was partly inspired by two old family stories from my mother's background in Easter Ross from way back. Supposedly one of my ancestors caught a mermaid while fishing. No one else ever saw it, though. Another, stood in a fairy circle and was never seen again. So, perhaps, the story is based on true stories.
